The Health and Care Worker visa route allows healthcare professionals to relocate and work in the UK in an eligible job with the NHS, an NHS supplier or an adult in social care. The UK employer must hold a valid sponsor licence.
The main requirements to be met are as follows:
- You have been given a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ from an eligible sponsor that holds a sponsor licence.
- Your role must be an eligible role. This means that you must either be a qualified doctor, nurse, health professional or adult social care professional which falls within the list of approved occupation codes.
- You meet the English language requirement.
- You meet the financial maintenance requirement.
- You have a criminal record certificate if you are applying from outside the UK and are working in certain jobs.

The maximum length the visa can be applied for is 5 years before you need to extend it. You can apply to extend your visa as many times given you meet the eligibility requirements at the time of application.
Health workers such as nurses and doctors are permitted to bring their spouse, unmarried partner and children to live with them. However, if you are a care worker or a senior care worker your partner and children are not permitted to apply as your dependants unless you were employed as a care worker or senior care worker in the UK and on a Health and Care Worker visa before 11 March 2024and one of the following is true:
- You are still on a Health and Care Worker visa.
- You are extending your Health and Care Worker visa with your current employer.
- You are changing to a new job within the same occupation code while on a Health and Care Worker visa.
The Health and Care worker visa can last for any period up to 5 years at a time and you are able to extend it for as long as required. You can apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK once you have spent a period of 5 years under this route.
