UK Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) Visa
A UK Permitted Paid Engagement allows eligible overseas professionals and experts to visit the United Kingdom to undertake specific, pre-arranged paid activities connected to their professional expertise.
Permitted Paid Engagements are undertaken under the Standard Visitor route rather than through a separate work visa category. The engagement must be arranged before travel, supported by an appropriate UK invitation and completed within the first 30 days after entering the UK.

What Is a UK Permitted Paid Engagement?
A Permitted Paid Engagement, commonly referred to as a PPE, enables certain overseas professionals to receive payment for specific professional activities in the UK without obtaining a sponsored work visa.
It is not a separate immigration route. PPE activities form part of the Standard Visitor framework.
A qualifying engagement must:
- Be arranged before the applicant travels to the UK
- Be supported by a formal invitation from the appropriate UK organisation or client
- Relate to the applicant’s professional expertise and occupation overseas
- Fall within one of the permitted categories under the Immigration Rules
- Be completed within the first 30 days after entry to the UK
One or more qualifying paid engagements may be undertaken provided each satisfies the relevant requirements and is completed within that 30-day period.
Is the Permitted Paid Engagement Visa a Separate Visa?
No.
Applicants undertaking a PPE enter under the Standard Visitor route.
Depending on nationality and circumstances, an individual may:
- Need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa before travelling
- Need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
- Be able to visit without obtaining a visa, subject to the applicable entry requirements
Regardless of whether a visa or ETA is required, the individual must satisfy the Standard Visitor requirements and the additional PPE conditions.
What Are the Main PPE Eligibility Requirements?
An applicant must generally:
- Be aged 18 or over
- Be a genuine visitor
- Intend to leave the UK at the end of the visit
- Not use frequent or successive visits to make the UK their main home
- Have a qualifying pre-arranged engagement
- Hold the required formal invitation
- Demonstrate appropriate professional expertise
- Show that the engagement relates to their profession or occupation overseas
- Have sufficient funds for the reasonable costs of the visit
- Comply with the wider Standard Visitor restrictions
