Updates to Portuguese residence permits

Portuguese authorities have introduced a further extension of residence permit validity through Decree-Law No. 85-B/2025, published on 30th June 2025 and came into effect on 1st July 2025.

In light of continued processing delays at the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA), Portuguese authorities have introduced a further extension of residence permit validity through Decree-Law No. 85-B/2025, published on 30th June 2025 and came into effect on 1st July 2025.

Under this latest measure, residence permits that were due to expire between 22nd February 2020 and 30th June 2025 will now remain valid and fully recognised by all Portuguese authorities until 15th October 2025. This includes certain visas and other residence documentation.

Holders of permits originally set to expire before 30th June 2025 are advised to submit their renewal applications before the new expiry date of 15th October 2025. Following that date, permits will continue to be recognised for a further 180 days from the date of issuance of the renewal payment confirmation by AIMA.

At the time of writing, the authorities have not yet provided detailed guidance on the renewal process. Further updates may follow, potentially involving the Task Force for the Recovery of Pending Processes.

Employers and individuals with residence permits in Portugal should ensure they remain informed of developments and take timely steps to comply with renewal requirements once further information becomes available.
