UAE announces changes to Golden visa rules

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced additional requirements for scientists and specialists applying for the Golden visa in Dubai without a government nomination. These changes, which affect eligibility and documentation, may lead to longer processing times and require applicants to reassess their immigration options.

As of 23rd January, applicants who do not have a government nomination must demonstrate at least two years of continuous employment with the same local entity before they can apply. This new rule adds an additional layer of eligibility, potentially impacting professionals who have recently changed employers or are considering moving to the UAE for work under this visa category.

In addition to the employment requirement, another key change has been in place since July 2024. Applicants must now submit an equivalency certificate to confirm that their degree meets UAE academic standards and originates from an accredited international institution. Depending on the authorities’ discretion, legalised transcripts may also be required. Those who hold academic qualifications issued in the UAE are exempt from the equivalency certificate requirement but must still legalise their documents before submitting their application.

These new documentation requirements may lead to extended processing times due to the administrative steps involved in obtaining equivalency certificates and legalising academic records. As a result, individuals and companies hiring under this visa category should plan for potential delays and adjust their onboarding timelines accordingly.

It remains uncertain whether existing Golden visa holders will need to meet these new requirements when applying for renewal. Applicants who are unable to satisfy the updated criteria may need to explore alternative Golden visa categories or other immigration pathways to secure their long-term residency in the UAE.
