Norway has raised the financial threshold for those sponsoring family members to join them in the country. To meet the new subsistence requirement, sponsors must now demonstrate an annual income of at least NOK 400,000 (approximately USD 36,014).
This increase, tied to 0.5 times the National Insurance basic amount, is put in place to ensure families settling in Norway can support themselves without relying on state benefits.
The decision aligns with Norway’s broader efforts to tighten family immigration rules, a move first announced last year to maintain sustainable immigration levels. While the income requirement has become stricter, Norwegian authorities have recently relaxed other regulations, such as lifting the restriction that prevented permanent residency applicants from qualifying if they had previously received financial assistance under the Social Services Act.
Government officials have indicated that further adjustments to the subsistence requirement may be considered in the future.
