Italy announces stringent visa rules for family members

The Italian government has provided further clarity on recent changes to family sponsorship rules, confirming that certain foreign residents remain exempt from the two-year residency requirement before sponsoring family members. This exemption applies to those holding an EU Blue Card, an EU Intra-Corporate Transferee (ICT) permit, or an Investor Visa. These individuals can continue sponsoring family members immediately, as was previously the case.

Family members of eligible applicants can still enter Italy through the accompanying family members procedure, which allows them to apply for entry clearance before the main applicant arrives. This process requires the main applicant to grant power of attorney to a representative in Italy who can submit the application on their behalf. Once the clearance is granted, family members can obtain their visas from the Italian consulate and travel to Italy together with the primary applicant to complete their residence registration.

For EU Blue Card holders and those on ICT permits, family reunification remains unaffected by the two-year requirement, ensuring a streamlined process regardless of how long the permit holder has resided in Italy. The same rules apply to Investor Visa holders, who can bring their families without being subject to the waiting period.

Italy offers three different family permit pathways: accompanying family members, family reunification, and family cohesion. Under the new regulations, the latter two options, family reunification and family cohesion, now require the main applicant to have resided in Italy continuously for at least two years before family members can apply. However, those entering under the accompanying family members process can still travel with the main applicant as long as they secure entry clearance in advance.
