Philippines
Philippines offers several types of visas depending on the duration and purpose of the visit. Here is a summary of the primary visa categories:
This visa is intended for foreign nationals who visit the Philippines for short-term engagements in scientific, commercial, industrial, professional, or business activities without receiving compensation from a Philippine entity. Business visitors must obtain a business visa unless they are exempt according to their citizenship, which allows them to conduct their activities in compliance with Philippine immigration laws.
Provisional work permit (PWP): Issued by the Bureau of Immigration (BI), the PWP allows foreign nationals who hold a temporary visitor visa to begin employment in the Philippines while awaiting the approval of their employment visa application.
Special work permit (SWP): The SWP is designed for short-term assignments or employment of up to six months. It is suitable for individuals who are engaged in non-recurring, temporary tasks. A locally registered company must sponsor the applicant and act as the petitioner. Initially valid for three months, the SWP can be extended for an additional three months. Holders of this permit must maintain their tourist status, and therefore, extensions of their tourist visa may be necessary.
Alien employment permit (AEP): Required by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the AEP authorizes foreign nationals to engage in gainful employment in the Philippines. It is issued when no domestic manpower is available to fulfill the specific job role. This permit is a prerequisite for securing a work visa and is crucial for ensuring that the employment of foreigners does not adversely affect the local workforce.
