The UK extends the ETA scheme for travellers

Starting 8th January 2025, non-European nationals eligible for visa-free travel to the UK will be required to obtain an ETA before their journey. This includes visitors coming for tourism, business, or short-term study for up to six months, as well as Creative Workers entering under the three-month concession.

The application process is straightforward and can be completed online or via the dedicated ETA app. Travellers will need to submit personal information, passport details, and a photograph, along with paying a £10 fee. Processing is typically quick, with most applications resolved in a matter of days. Once granted, an ETA will remain valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries.

Colombian nationals now require a visa

Colombian nationals will no longer be eligible for the ETA program. Instead, they must apply for a visa to travel to the UK, regardless of the purpose or duration of their visit. This change introduces an additional procedural and financial burden, so affected travellers should plan accordingly.

European nationals

The ETA requirement will extend to European nationals from 2nd April 2025. However, applications will open as early as 5th March 2025, providing ample time for travellers to secure authorisation ahead of their trips.

Exemptions and exceptions

Certain groups are exempt from ETA requirements, including:

  • Irish nationals, who can continue to travel freely under Common Travel Area arrangements.
  • Non-Irish residents of Ireland travelling from within the Common Travel Area.
  • Individuals with existing UK visas or entry permissions, as these remain valid for entry without an ETA.
