Costa Rica offers several types of visas depending on the duration and purpose of the visit. Here is a summary of the primary visa categories:
Tourist Visa
This visa is designed for visitors traveling to Costa Rica for tourism purposes. Some nationalities do not require a visa to enter the country.
Temporary resident visa
Specifically for company representatives who intend to work in Costa Rica and receive local remuneration. This visa is valid for up to 180 days.
Temporary Residence
Available to professionals and specialized technicians for up to 180 days. Applicants must submit a letter to the Director of Immigration, signed by the legal representative of the company sponsoring the foreign individual.
Permanent residence for foreign nationals
Applicable to foreigners, their spouses, and their first-degree relatives by blood who have held temporary residence for three consecutive years.
Permanent Residence - Change of category
Requires a minimum of three consecutive years of prior residence. Applicants must submit a written request for a change of category, explaining the reasons for the application, signed in the presence of a public official or authenticated by a lawyer.
