UK’s New ID Check App

It is with utmost certainty that the global pandemic sparked by the spread of COVID-19 from Wuhan, China to the rest of the world has had an indelible effect on all aspects of daily life. For all organisations, governing bodies and so forth, they have been forced to develop a stamina to continue operating amid this international crisis.

Particularly for UK immigration purposes, the Home Office has had to develop new processes to overcome the worldwide travel restrictions and facilitate the transfer of migrants both UK inbound and outbound.

For travellers located overseas seeking to apply for a visa to live in the UK, they must familiarise themselves with some of the new provisions used during the application process.

UK ID Check App

In the Verification of Identity stage of the application process, there is now a new method of verifying one’s identity. This is known as the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app which can be downloaded via a smartphone.

Normally, individuals would need to book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) and provide a physical copy of identity documents such as EU biometric passports, to confirm their identity.

As of recently, visa applicants can download this app on their smartphones and will not be required to provide physical ID documentation. All they must do is simply take a picture of the photo ID page in their passport and submit this via the app. For those who are unable to use the app because their phone is incompatible or other reasons, they can use a friend or family member’s phone to access the app and verify their identity.

Applicant users of the app will be notified of the decision on their visa applications as well as other integral information through an online View and Prove service. Once their immigration status has been updated, they will be notified and directed to access the service whilst providing specified information.  Here, they can view their visa conditions and share their immigration information with those such as employers, universities, or relevant organisations.

Unless applicants choose not to verify their identity using the app, successful applicants can only view their immigration and application information online using this service. It must be remembered that all information must be updated should anything change, and this must be completed using the app.

Applicants who do not use the app will receive a physical copy of their application and immigration status information, by collecting a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
