New fast-track NHS Visa
The Home Secretary, Priti Patel has unveiled plans for the introduction of a new NHS Visa, which would fast-track entry into the UK for Doctors and Nurses to fill job shortages. The visa should be introduced after the UK leaves the EU, and the UK Visas & Immigration have indicated that it would cost half the price of a normal visa and is likely to be processed within 2-weeks.
Ms Patel has expressed several times her plans to introduce the Australian style points-based system to allow the UK to bring migrants to fill the required skills. It is pertinent to note that those applicants coming to work in the UK for the NHS would be given precedence over other applicants.
Another benefit would be that they would also be given the option to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge through their salary, if they are unable to pay the full amount at the outset.
Whilst this is good news, the UK Visas & Immigration have indicated they should hopefully roll a similar scheme for social workers too in order to bridge the skills gap in this sector.
