Austria faces first lockdown for unvaccinated people

November 17, 2021 | COVID-19, News, Travel

It has been reported that record infections have spread across Austria. The top of Austria which borders Germany and Czech Republic is said to have the country’s highest level of Covid cases and the least people vaccinated. As such, Austria is heading towards a lockdown for unvaccinated residents.

Currently, unvaccinated people are already banned from going to restaurants, cinemas, ski lifts and hairdressers. With Austria heading towards a lockdown, this would mean that unvaccinated people would not be able to leave their home, unless for essential reasons.

Why are so many Austrians unvaccinated?

Other than Lichtenstein, Austria has the lowest vaccination rate of any western European country. The Covid vaccine has been questioned by the Austria  “Freedom Party,” a political party which has been favoured by many Austrians. It is said that this encouragement has swayed a large number of residents from having the vaccine.

Similarly, the Netherlands government has announced a lockdown in response to a rise in infections and Germany is said to impose restrictions on those who have not been vaccinated.
